Nigerian university administrators and researchers alike have been complaining that the industry is not patronizing the outcomes of their research activities, preferring instead to acquire foreign technologies. University researchers have also been criticized for not undertaking problem solving research and not understanding the needs and pain points of industry. What is apparent is that Nigerian universities do not seem to understand how to go about the process of undertaking technology transfer and commercialization of their research output, and many do not have the formal structures required to undertake technology transfer and commercialization. Technology transfer and commercialization are crucial components of any nation’s innovation system,  which are necessary to spur economic growth. If we are not doing it right, the transformation into an innovation-led and knowledge-based economy may well remain a mirage.

What are the processes, systems and structures required to effectively go about commercializing research output? What skill sets are required to perform the task? Who does technology transfer in a university setting? These and other questions will be answered at this session.
