The Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) has pioneered the use of behavioral science research in policy, standing as the first African government to engage a Policy Innovation Unit (PIU) dedicated to the use of behavioral theory, tools and testing to inform policy. In 2016, the FGN deployed a series of social programs housed under the National Social Investment Office (NSIO) to address the challenges around Nigeria’s human capital development and lift millions of Nigerians out of poverty. These programs were designed to provide entrepreneurial finance, conditional cash transfers, free school feeding, and youth employment, focused on improving the welfare of millions who are financially excluded.

Between 2017 and 2019, the PIU conducted a series of behavioral science interventions designed to support the NSIO programs by developing, testing and recommending effective solutions to solve the challenges within the programs. In Q1 of 2019, the PIU conducted an impact evaluation study to assess the impacts of the NSIPs against the specific program objectives – as envisaged during the adoption and initial implementation of the programs.

The NESG is pleased to invite you to this strategic session to share key findings and behavioral insights gleaned from the PIU engagement with the NSIO. The session is scheduled as follows;

The PIU has a mandate to design and test interventions that would optimize aspects of delivery and adoption of social welfare programs in the country. This strategic session aims to create awareness around the PIU findings and to increase public and private sector demand for behavioral science supported government programs and initiatives.
