NES #30 Public Lecture & Founders’ Forum: In the National Interest: Reflecting on the Past, Reimagining the Future

The 30th Anniversary of the annual Nigerian Economic Summit (NES) offers a unique opportunity to reflect on its progress and impact since the first Summit was convened in 1993. The public-private dialogue platform was established three decades ago at a critical juncture in Nigeria's economic landscape amidst economic challenges and a desire for reform. At the time, private sector leaders from various sectors and industries came together with a shared vision to create a platform for constructive engagement with the public sector leaders. The success of NES #1 was based on a recognition that collaboration between government and business was essential for shaping the future trajectory of the Nigerian economy.

In 1996, the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG) was incorporated as a non-profit, non-partisan organisation dedicated to promoting reforms aimed at transforming Nigeria into a globally competitive, private-sector-led economy. NESG has made significant strides in fulfilling its mandate and through research, programmes, seminars, and conferences, it has actively engaged with stakeholders to facilitate the formulation and implementation of an agenda of socio-economic reforms. Its role as a catalyst for public-private dialogue has been pivotal in underpinning the synergy between government, the private sector, and other stakeholders.

At the heart of the NESG's advocacy efforts, the annual Nigerian Economic Summit remains a flagship event and NES #30 marks a significant milestone in the journey of progress and impact. Therefore, in commemorating this 30th Anniversary, it is important to assess and discuss the role of this public-private dialogue platform in Nigeria’s socio-economic landscape
