Infrastructure Policy Commission General Assembly

Nigerian infrastructure system faces significant challenges despite being the largest economy in Africa. The country's infrastructure encompasses many sectors including transportation, water supply and housing & urban development.

Nigeria's transportation infrastructure includes roads, railways, ports, and airports. Road transportation is the most dominant mode, but the road network suffers from inadequate road infrastructure to match the country's requirements and poor maintenance of available road networks, resulting in frequent significant road failures and congestion. The Railway sector is undergoing revitalisation, including construction of new lines and rehabilitation of existing ones. Ports, especially Lagos Port Complex and Port Harcourt, are major gateways for international trade but face congestion and inefficiencies. Airports, such as Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, are undergoing upgrades to effectively manage increasing passenger traffic.

Similarly, access to clean water remains a challenge in Nigeria, particularly in rural areas. The water supply infrastructure suffers from inadequate maintenance and suboptimal investment, leading to water scarcity, contamination, and waterborne diseases.

Furthermore, rapidly increasing population and urbanisation caused by economic and security factors unite to constrain housing and urban development. Consequently, the housing deficit continues to widen without a clear, coordinated and consistent national strategy to address the challenge.

While efforts are being made to improve the Nigerian infrastructure system through Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) and other government initiatives; there is an urgent need for substantial investment, effective governance, and renewed efforts to address the unyielding challenges to accelerate the country's economic growth and development
