The national coordinator of open government partnership (OGP) Nigeria, Mr. Benjamin Okolo in his opening remark, welcomed all participants to the retreat and wished them a fruitful deliberation.

He noted that the National Action Plan II reinforces the commitment of the NESG and other stakeholders to eliminating all forms of corruption prone systems. He reiterated that the NAP II is the product of co-creation and the capacity to deliver will be dependent on the ability of the public, private and civil society sectors to collaborate.

Ms. Seun Ojo who represented Dr. Tayo Aduloju, senior fellow, Nigeria Economic Summit Group (NESG) and incoming Non-state actors co-chair, OGP National steering committee delivered the opening remarks on the second day of the retreat. In her statement, she revealed that NESG was deeply committed to the National Open Government partnership and that Dr. Aduloju was honoured to serve as the incoming co-chair (non-state actor) of the second OGP national action plan.

Other stakeholders who spoke at the event revealed that the OGP is an international multi-stakeholder initiative focused on improving transparency, accountability, citizen participation and responsiveness to citizens through technology and innovation. The OGP brings together government and civil society champions of reforms who recognize that governments are more likely to be more effective and credible when they open governance to public input and oversight.

The Nigeria OGP multi-stakeholder forum National Steering Committee (NSC), made up of 42 members was set up with equal membership from government and non-state actors, with a governance arrangement consisting of two substantive co-chairs (state and non-state actor) and two incoming co-chairs reflecting the principle, practice and spirit of co-creation that embodies the open government process.

The partnership gave birth to a robust participatory process which inspired a communication strategy that will enable both government and the citizens take complete ownership of the plan. The national steering committee pledged to work hand in hand with all stakeholders to ensure a more open and transparent government that delivers the equitable and sustainable development that improves service delivery for all citizens.
